Description: Scrap book of miscellaneous photographs, many of which have no captions and have not been identified. At the front of the album is an undated newspaper cutting showing the original building used for the Colonial Museum in 1865, which `has been revealed by the pulling down of the Dominion Museum, at the back of Parliament House. For many years this building has been used for a variety of purposes, museum exhibits being housed in adjacent quarters, but it is about to be demolished'. The first group show interior scenes of the Canterbury Museum, with exhibits of bird skeletons, and mounted birds. Other scenes show mounted animals, possibly not in Canterbury. Scenery includes views of the Franz Josef Glacier; and a number which are identified showing the gold-mining area around Ross and Donoghues, the Totara River and Mikonui River. One page has six photographs of mountainous regions in Switzerland; several show the area near the Wellington caves in Queensland, Australia; and two views show the breaking of the Cook Strait Cable. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Identified people are: Senior Sergeant George Christopher Donnelly of Hokitika police; Ivy Harper and Bert Birchfield; Mike Armstrong and Jim Daken; Mary and Heather Cornwell; Charleston coal mine operator Neil Mouat; Mack Heinz; Tex Smith; Mike Armstrong; Henry Heveldt and M Bennett of Nolan's Mill; Garth Graham; meat shooters Mike Bennett and Kevin Blythell; John 'Opo' Angus, the Eggling brothers; helicopter pilot Ben Morris and Les's wife Mary Cleveland; and Johnny Hewer, Claire Easterbrook and Liam Easterbrook in front of the Neils Beach school house. Featured natural environments include the hot springs at Welcome Flat and the Karangarua Valley, River, Ranges, and the view from the Sefton bivouac, Ocean Beach, and Neils Beach, including car wrecks at the rubbish dump. Other images (and series of images) of note include scenes from the Kumara races; environmental damage (slips and road works at Milford Tunnel, Inangahua River road, and Haast and Jackson's Bay area; open face coal mining at Charleston; deer hunting, largely based in Mussel Point; Central Otago Hotels (Cardrona, White Horse, and Vulcan); Post Offices and boxes (St Bathan's, Outram, Ophir, and Dunedin) and a Pacific Films crew on Fox Glacier. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes views of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, Gillespies Beach, Revingtons Hotel (Greymouth), over the Lewis Pass by bus to Christchurch. There he shows views of Warner's Hotel, a large Victorian house, a boathouse on the River Avon, a view from the Summit Road, Lyttelton Harbour and Homebush (home of the Deans family at Darfield). From Christchurch views include the Rakaia River and Lake Coleridge. Slides on this sheet are numbered 148A-174 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 149-151, 154-155, 158-159, 161-162, 166, 168, 172) showing views of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, Maruia Springs, over the Lewis Pass, views of Christchurch (including Christchurch Cathedral and Cathedral Square, the River Avon and Scott's Statue), and the Rakaia River. These were taken as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. The lecture series are filed in later sequences. Photograph number 35 shows seven guides with a coiled climbing rope and two crossed ice picks in front.
