Description: Cadastral map of Evans Bay to Kilbirnie, also to Constable and Owen streets, Newtown, Wellington. The area includes the coastline with Patent Slip and proposed jetties near Belvedere Road to Rodrigo Road, Kilbirnie. Numbered sections include acreages and some sites of houses. Roads are named and a stream with a bridge is marked. A note states 'right to water' at Busaco Road. A track to Lyell [sic] Bay is noted, as is a road to the Pilot Station. The town belt is marked. The lithographer is named as Lyon & Blair. Additions to the map are prominently marked sections at Evans Bay with various dates and names of Short, Williams, Ferguson, Harcourt, B. Smith, Rhodes, Rae, McCarthy, Boon, Earl, Knowles, Barber, Tait, White, Edw. Barton. The name of Lyon is marked in sections at Kilbirnie. Description: Album of photographs, some prints, some contacts from 35mm film, taken by Professor John Salmon in Wellington. Most of the images describe his use of different camera lenses and filters. Many of the scenes are taken from Professor Salmon's window at Victoria University of Wellington, showing different moods in different weather patterns. They include early morning, afternoon, and night views, northerly wind and southerly wind cloud patterns, including a southerly storm. He also has a large number of images of Wellington Harbour and wharves, again taken in different lights, showing ships, reflections and buildings. Other sequences show views of the Hutt Valley, Silverstream, and Glenmore Street in Wellington, many taken on misty early mornings. He was apprenticed to John Fitchett, coach builder in Wellington, then with other firms including Rouse & Hurrell. He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. Description: The entrance from Evans Bay, Wellington Harbour, to the tunnel built by J. C. Crawford to drain Burnham Water, a lake in the centre of Miramar Peninsula. The entrance to the tunnel is cut into a cliff and supporting beams are built around the opening. A small hut stands to the right of the tunnel and a path winds over the hill-top to the right. Rocks, flax bushes and a small cabbage tree are distinguishable in the foreground and there is a small rowboat tied to a stake at the water's edge, in the centre foreground. Hataitai or Whataitai was the earlier name for Miramar Peninsula The preliminary sketch for this sepia watercolour is a pencil work held at A-229-023, with an almost identical title. Description: View from the south end of Evans' Bay, (close to the site of today's airport) looking along Miramar Peninsula, past a small hut and the entrance to the tunnel dug by J. C. Crawford to drain Burnham Water (a former lake in the centre of Miramar Peninsula), along steep cliffs to the north. There is almost no beach below the cliffs, since the beach area was lifted by the 1856 earthquake. The hills of Roseneath and of Wadestown and Ngaio are visible in the distance.
