Description: Shows harbour scene form Commercial Bay looking towards the North Shore and Rangitoto Island. The prison hulk Marion is to the right of a sailing ship on the harbour and there are houses in the foreground, with the house on the left marked as belonging to Mr Jones, probably Mr Humphrey Jones Attribution on stylistic grounds. Sails on ships were painted in by John Lawford, Auckland art dealer, before he sold the painting to Dr Hogg. He based his work on the sailing ship in Charles Heaphy's watercolour "Bream Head", owned by the Library.. Description: Shows ships in harbour, houses, and a man driving cows on a hillside path at right. From Brooklyn looking across Te Aro and the harbour to the Hutt Valley. At left is a Maori wood-gatherer. Tree in left foreground has the creeper kie kie growing on it. A tree has been felled in centre foreground, and there is a cabbage tree at right. Upper Willis Street runs down to Clay Point, at the junction of the present Willis Street and Lambton Quay. Thorndon Flat lies beyond ending at Pipitea Point. Colour photolithograph of this original was reproduced for "The Barraud prints" published by the Alexander Turnbull Library Endowment Trust Board in 1967. The photolithograph was entitled: "Wellington from Brooklyn - across Te Aro and Thorndon, 1861". Horses are being exercised in the centre field. Previously, the two sides of the work were not matched together and the right side was thought to be "Patea 5 March". (This was because it had been juxtaposed with page [48] which bears this caption in one corner). Left side was previously catalogued at B-045-032, and right side at B-045-021.
