Geologist Royden Thomson in drainage tunnel, Cromwell Gorge
Date: 17 August 1989
From: Dominion Post (Newspaper): Photographic negatives and prints of the Evening Post and Dominion newspapers
Reference: EP-Energy-Hydro Electricity, Clyde Dam-08
Description: Chief site geologist Royden Thomson explaining the structure within a drainage tunnel at the no 5 creek slide. Photographed by an unknown photographer in August 1989. The lake behind the Clyde dam involved inundating the toes of 14 major landslides in the Cromwell Gorge section of the new reservoir. It was feared that a rise in ground water could cause these slides to move, and possibly slump into the lake causing waves that might top the dam and damage the surrounding communities. One of the measures to stabilise these landslides involved constructing over 18 km of drainage tunnels throughout the gorge. This was some of the extra work causing a budget over-run on the project of nearly 50 percent. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Physical Description: Silver gelatin print, 25.4 x 20 cm
