Railways album 3

Description: Publicity photographs taken by various unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. The only identifying information is a few pencilled notes giving some locations, but there are no captions identifying people. There is a large sequence showing events surrounding the first celebrations marking the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6th February 1934 attended by Lord Bledisloe. He had purchased the site, and donated money for the Treaty House renovations in 1932. The celebrations brought 10,000 Maori to Waitangi. The images show huge crowds, haka parties, various iwi performing, and parties of dignitaries including Lord and Lady Bledisloe, Joseph Gordon Coates and George William Forbes. Other scenes with Lord Bledisloe show him visiting the Waitaki Hydroelectric power station. Views of New Zealand include Government Tourist Bureau accomodation houses including those at Waitomo and the Hermitage (Mt. Cook); accomodation houses at Helensville and Parakai with interior and exterior views, and showing activities available (spa pools, games such as croquet, golf, and bowls); anglers standing by swordfish they have caught; skiing and ski lessons; and waterfalls. Industrial and agricultural views show dairy cows, citrus groves, the Kiwi Bacon Factory, printing presses, and race courses. The album contains images of the Lockett family, particularly Edith Lockett and her siblings, Kenneth Ewart, Winifred Maud, and Edward William Lockett. The album also contains group portraits with Edith Lockett's parents, Ada Florence (nee Harrowby) and Henry George Lockett, and members of their extended family and friends, chiefly taken at the family home at 14 Stevens Grove, Lower Hutt. The album also has photographs from Kenneth Ewart Lockett's military service in World War One from November 1916 onward, and shows Kenneth and other soldiers at their camp, and includes images of army tents at an unknown location. The album also includes images of recreation activities primarily by women, such as women swimming and both men and women at the beach. Views include the house, views from the house, three people in the garden (probably Rhoda with her husband and an unidentified young woman). Other views show the entrance and driveway, sheep, parts of their garden, eucalyptus ficifolia in flower, a rimu and hydrangeas. One scene shows a group of four women playing croquet on a lawn.
