Description: Photographs of the following: a set of seven photographs by Collis and annotated by F P Corkill, land agent, re landholding around the Waiwhakaiho River; scenic views such as waterfalls, lakes, and the Pink and White Terraces; bridges with annotations re height etc; sixteen numbered photographs mounted two to a card of scenic views in the Taranaki Region, Rotorua and the far north (including ones of Taumaha Gorge, Taranaki and Lake Ora - location unidentified); a set of seven photographs of the Waipu Caves including Lot's wife, the anvil and the sugar loaf in Morrison's Cave; a clipping of St Paul's Cupola and a photograph of Kauri Gully, Northcote with annotations on resolutions passed re the establishment of reservations; a panorama in two photographs of Flagstaff Hill, Dunedin with annotations re a potential reserve; and two of a tramping party of three men and five boys resting at a waterfall. Barker of Courtenay Place, Wellington. Also includes photographs and newspaper cuttings of transport used by country children going to school, including horseback and riding on cows. Description: Photograph album containing views of the South Island, including Christchurch, Diamond Lake, Otira Gorge, Bluff, Skippers Gorge, Waiau River and Hanmer. North Island views include views of Mount Tarawera after the eruption in June 1886, and views of the Pink and White Terraces before they were destroyed in the eruption. Other views show Napier, showing the first ship to berth at the new breakwater, SS Flora, on 22nd October 1895; Marine Parade in Napier; street views in Gisborne and Whangarei; Parihaka; and the Rotorua, Wairakei area with the Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, and the Waimangu Geyser. Photographs taken circa 1890s, by some unidentified photographers, but many by named photographers, including Arthur James Iles (Thames), E Wheeler & Son (Christchurch), Hawley & Co (Napier). Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. Description: Photographs of large groups of people taken on tours run by New Zealand Railways, using rail and road transport. The album covers various trips taken by large groups of unidentified people, mostly in the North Island, and only as far south as Tokaanu and the Whanganui River. They travelled by rail, by road and by ferry. Very few of the photographs have captions, but several are labelled "Commerce trip", and include images of farming, ploughing, stock sales yards, and a large group of men picnicking around a hangi (p. 14). Description: Scenic views of New Zealand chiefly taken by Government Publicity photographers. North Island views include the Waitomo Caves system, including the "Waitomo Caves Hostel" (circa 1908); "King Edward's Court" and "Bride's Jewels" in the Ruakuri Cave; and an image of glow-worms. The other main area in the North Island is along the Whanganui River, including small ferry boats, the Makere Houseboat, and a Maori in a dugout canoe. There is one view of Lake Waikaremoana showing the Panekiri Bluff (no. 28); and one view of Seatoun, Wellington, taken circa 1910s. South Island views are chiefly in the Southern Alps and glacier area on the West Coast. The other main region is lake Kanieri, with a number of images of a small boat named "Dorothy".
