Description: Folder comprises a partial letter from an unidentified author to his sister. Written at the Waitahuna gold diggings in Otago, the letter describes the fortunes of the author at the gold mines in Victoria, Australia and Waitahuna. Source of title - Provide by Library Gold was discovered in the Waitahuna Gully in 1861. Waitahuna is 7 miles from Lawerence and 53 miles from Dunedin. Quantity: 1 folder(s). 0.01 Linear Metres. Physical Description: Ms (photocopy) Provenance: The photocopy of this letter was donated by Mr M Valatin of Wiltshire. The original letter is owned by Mr M Lintern. Mr Lintern saved the record from destruction by bonfire. An unidentified old man of Winsley had been disposing of his archives in this manner when Mr Lintern intervened and salvaged it.

Description: Cover James' birth, childhood in London, the voyage to New Zealand on the `African' in 1861, his work on the `Southern Cross' newspaper in Auckland, impressions of Dunedin and New Zealand in general, his employment as a shearer, station hand, miner, gardener and carter in NSW and Victoria 1865-1876. Includes sketch maps detailing his travels in Australia and an undated photograph of farm labourers. Source of title - Transcribed Relationship complexity - Micro-MS-0860 includes his shipboard diary kept on the `African' James Fry was born in England. In 1861 the Fry family emigrated to New Zealand settling in Auckland, then Dunedin, where James' father became a storekeeper on the goldfields. In 1865 the family moved to Melbourne. Description: Album of images taken by various photographers, some of whom are identified, probably between 1870 and 1899. Views of New Zealand (tourist scenes of the South Island include the West Coast, Queenstown-Lakes District; and of the North Island include thermal areas around Lake Rotomahana, Ohinemutu, and Wairakei). These are interspersed with scenes in the West Indies, India, and Australia. Names of places shown in the album are listed above. Pages 29-30 show images of "SS Tarawera" in Wet Jacket Arm. Pages 30-32 show views of one or possibly two ships. The names in pencilled captions are not clear. The ship on page 30 appears to have the name RMSS Rune [or Rane, or Rome], but on page 32 that name is crossed out and appears to be RMSS Shamun? However the name on page 31 appears more like RMSS Shannon, and photographs of the Shannon appear very like the full image in this album on page 30, in which the ship is sailing through "the canal".
