Description: Album of publicity photographs, and photographs of posters and advertisements taken by unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. Many of the images in this album were taken for a series of articles written by Oliver Neal Gillespie between January 1939 and June 1940, published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine. The series was entitled "Buy New Zealand goods and build New Zealand. New Zealand Industries Series". These contribute the largest group of images in the album, covering a wide range of industries. They include men's and women's clothing manufacturers; electrical engineering companies such as Pallo Engineering (petrol pumps), National Engineering (Neeco electric ovens), Standard Engineering Company; tobacco factories; potteries; Nugget shoe polish factory; brushware factories; and companies associated with the manufacture of food products (eg Watties canneries, Edmonds Baking Powder, Griffins and Bycrofts biscuit makers, and Whittome & Stevenson sauce and pickle makers. There are other sequences of images, including newly built state housing in Lower Hutt, with some houses still under construction beside the Hutt River, a streetscape, and a children's playground (p 7-8); a large crowd joining in a send-off of R.S.A. men to Australia in April 1938; a train laden with boxes of oranges from Rarotonga, the "Special orange train from Auckland"; and photographs of charts showing the progress of the New Zealand Government Railways, with railways workshops staff organisation charts (for Otahuhu, Addington, Hutt & Hillside Workshops (p 28-29). On p 35 there are views of a new hangar at Rongotai Aerodrome, under construction, then views of the completed exterior and the interior with a row of Blackburn B-5 Baffin bi-planes. Several images show collection of Railway sports trophies (including cups for their cricket teams), and two views of New Zealand Railways staff member Neil Edwards, a tennis champion who represented New Zealand in Britain in 1939. Description: Set of photographs of drainage operations on the Hauraki Plains. Spoil from the canal and ditch construction was used as foundation for roads so road construction is also shown. The photographs include two men hay harvesting in front of a small house, a man in a flax field, a dredge at work, the labourers' camp, boats moored at a jetty in Ngatea. Description: Photographs of trips taken in 1925 by an unidentified photographer. On the first trip the photographer goes by car to the Nelson Lakes District, and the Buller River, to the Korere Valley "and so home". The second trip is one travelling to the New Zealand Exhibition at Dunedin in November 1925, though there are no images showing the exhibition. The trip goes from the Buller River; Lake Kaniere; views of the Rimu Dredge; near Jacksons; Otira Station; Otira Gorge; Springfield after a snow fall; Lyttelton Harbour; a visit to the remains of the old homestead at Double Corner, Waipara, with historic white gums; and lastly views from the Summit Road, Akaroa Peninsula. Description: The first ten images are views of Denniston and the Camp under snow. These images include distant views and views within the town showing houses and streets. One image shows coal trucks crossing the trestle bridge in snow covered country side, and another is of the iron bridge in winter. Five images are of waterfalls and scenic features taken along the horse track connecting Denniston with the coastal plain The last eight images are of Westport. One shows a typical villa of the period, another shows the exterior of the Westport Coal Company's laboratory building. There is a view of the railway yards with Denniston coal waiting in trucks. Description: Black and white photographic print, photographed by Exchange Court Studios. Wording on reverse of mount reads '"Moa" Dredge on the Clutha River. Fitted tailings elevator. The Moa dredge has proved to be a gold mine for the shareholders. Originally fitted with a 12" centrifugal pump for washing the wash dirt." The term 'Protected' is inscribed on the photograph. Moa (Gold dredge) was operating on the Clutha River in 1906. Designed by the consulting engineer E Roberts, the engine by R S Sparrow and Company, and built by Sutherland and Nelson.
