Description: Photograph album of prints, showing images of scenes around New Zealand, taken by Frank Arnold Coxhead from circa 1864 to circa 1890s. Compiler of album unidentified. Most prints have captions. - Includes images of scenes around Milford Sound, Queenstown-Lakes District and George Sound, which include images of lakes, ships, people, and buildings. - Also includes images of Christchurch, including the Christchurch Cathedral, the Victoria Bridge (with a caption inscribed in pencil saying 'Law Courts'), the Avon River, the Christchurch Botanical Gardens, Sumner and Shag Rock. - Also includes images of Auckland including Albert Park, North Shore, Auckland Hospital and a waterfall at Lucas Creek. - Also includes a series of images taken from what is described as the 'Hokitika Road' (Arthur's Pass) including the Otira Gorge, the Devil's Punchbowl, Mount Rolleston and Mount Philistine. - Also includes images of Dunedin including the Octagon (which includes images of horses and carts, buildings and roads), North East Valley, Leith Valley, Port Chalmers, and Dunedin Botanic Garden. - Also includes an image of a group of Maori standing outside Tamatekapua wharenui (meeting house) at Ohinemutu, and an image of (mainly Maori) people at Ateamuri [sic], Waikato. Description: Photographs of the South Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1956 to 1958. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Most prints relate to the West Coast Region, but also some images of Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago regions. Identified people are: Kopara Sawmill workers Bill Brown, Owen Jacobs, Morry Pullman, Hans Van Ruyven, Jimmy Birchfield, Doug Macalister, Joe Kavanagh, Neil McLean, Archy Fluerty, saw doctor John Henry Ord, Ted McGhie; licensee of Nelson Creek Hotel D Graham; Dorothy Debenham; Mick Bowie, and chief guide at Mt Cook Hermitage. Unidentified people include a female French tourist and some children. Featured natural environments include Karamea beach scenes, mining and sawmilling sites, and Buller Gorge. Featured town sequences include Reefton and Nelson's Creek houses and businesses, many of which are derelict. Further images (and series of images) of note include: a series of images of the Kopara Sawmill with forests, exterior felling scenes, lumber yard, processing of timber, and workers; spectators at a Cobden soccer match; crib-logging on the Wataroa River; various road works and maintainence scenes; locomotive at Ngahere sawmill site; images relating to various mining activities; church buildings; municipal buildings; and some mountaineering prints. Description: Shows Wellington city and harbour viewed from the area near the top of Vivian Street. A figure in horseback rides along a track curving around the hill slope at the left, and four head of cattle stand on a path amongst willows and other trees at the right. Further away is a road, possibly Abel Smith Street, with buildings including a house with a square turret. A church at left centre near the waterfront appears to be of Gothic design. There are several sail and steam ships in the harbour near Queens Wharf. The Hutt Valley and the snow-capped Tararuas can be seen in the distance. The original watercolour for a chromolithograph published in Barraud's "New Zealand graphic and descriptive" (London, 1879). Accompanied by backing board with name of Mrs Pownall, previous owner.
