The Sub-Antarctic Island views are all of native flora and fauna of the different islands, listed on the images as mollymawks, albatrosses, sea lions, crested penguins and erect-crested penguins On page 32 there is a view of the SS Knight Templar leaving Lyttelton on February 17, 1900, taking about 260 soldiers and 300 horses of the 3rd Contingent "the New Zealand Roughriders" to Durban, en route to fight in the South African War. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1880s by various photographers including James Bragge and Josiah Martin. Photographs of the Manawatu Gorge were taken by James Bragge, some of which show the horse and carriage in which Bragge carried his equipment. There is one photograph of English explorer and adventurer Captain Speedy who spent many years in Abyssinia and other parts of Africa, and who came to New Zealand in 1864, where he fought with the Waikato Militia before returning overseas. He is shown wearing Abyssinian costume (p 15). Description: Photographs from three expeditions in the Homer area, between the Upper Hollyford Valley and the Cleddau Valley, December 1943-January 1944; December 1944-January 1945; and the Homer Tunnel Museum Expedition in February 1946, all taken by John Tenison Salmon. Many of the photographs are landscapes, but others show native plants growing in the area. Two sequences show the damage caused by avalanches, one showing damage to bush and to a bridge in 1944; the others show damage from a major avalanche which buried the eastern portal of the Homer Tunnel which was under construction at the time (September 1945). Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Official occasions include scenes of the Empire and Australian Farmers' Tour, a view of the cortege at Sir Joseph Ward's funeral outside Parliament Buildings, the opening of Massey Memorial, and various views of unidentified railway officials in personal and group portraits, including one of the members of the New Zealand Railway Commission. Description: Mainly a series of holidays, tramping trips, and local excursions. The first is a trip to the head of Lake Te Anau and Milford Sound via the Milford track. It begins on the road between Glenorchy and Paradise, then through the valley of the Route Burn River to the Hollyford Valley where the party camped on the shores of Lake Howden. From there they passed Lakes Fergus and Gunn into the Eglinton River Valley and on to Te Anau, and then onto the Milford track to Milford Sound via the Clinton River Valley. Images on the way include Mount Balloon, Mount Elliott, Routeburn Hut, and Lake Ada. There is a view of Mitre Peak, Mount Tutoko, and the Pembroke Glacier from Milford Sound. The second series relates to a camping trip to Wanganui and the Whanganui River. This includes a game of golf and visiting friends in St John's Hill. There are views of the party's camp and a number of images taken during a canoeing trip up the Whanganui River in what looks like a Maori dug out canoe. Two other images in this group are of men standing beside the trigs on Mounts Holdworth and Dundas in the Tararua Ranges. The third series is of family and friends at home in Eastbourne and in the bush at Muritai; Girdlestone, a friend, and two women on motor cycles on the coast road; views of Eastbourne from the hills above the suburb; women on the beach and reading at home. The fourth series relates to a trip to the Volcanic Plateau during which the party climbed Mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. There are two group photographs of the whole party, one taken in front of the Waihohonu Hut, and the other on the summit of Mount Ruapehu. The fifth series shows a party of men and women on a walk and a picnic in the beach forest in Gollan's Valley near Eastbourne. The sixth series is a record of a holiday to Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds taken by a group of men over Christmas 1913. There are views of the sounds and surrounding landscape, of Portage where the party stayed, and of boat and fishing trips that they made during their stay. The seventh series is of a tramping trip to the Orongrongo River Valley. The views are of native forest, the river and the mountains, and one of two men boiling a billy beside their tent in the bush. The eighth series consists of two photographs of the wreck of the "Devon" on the rocks at Pencarrow Heads, Wellington harbour. This occured on the 25th of August 1913. The ninth series is a group of photographic postcards of the Te Anau, Milford region, and probably relate to the trip recorded at the beginning of this album. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
