Description: Topographic map, with some described features, of the area from Mohaka Whaling Station following the coast to Cape Kidnappers to Porangahau, including the Rua Taniwha Plains, the Kaweka Range and the Mohaka River. Includes the South, Totara, Aorangi, Otapahi, Hapuka, Mohaka and Ahuriri blocks in Central Hawke's Bay, with acreages and marked boundaries. Mountains, rivers, swamps, bush and settlements are named. Native reserves and pa sites are marked, as are native paths, also horse and walking tracks and supposed courses of rivers. A Roman Catholic Mission is marked between Napier and Cape Kidnappers, as are some churches. Land belonging to Harawira and Te Waka, Aram, Moananui, Kranama is marked, as is land to be granted to Wi Turoa. Other names include Beer and Rigby. Note on map states 'copy of tracing lent by J.G. Wilson, Esq., Hautama' signed by G.R. and dated May 23rd 1931. It is possible that the tracing was lent to Dept of Lands and Survey, Napier Office where a copy was made but this is unconfirmed Some parts of map are difficult to read - the copy is not a good one Title taken from handwritten note mounted on left of original map signed by J.G. Description: Sketch map of the province of Wellington, with topographical features including rivers, and depicting three major pieces of information as at December 1853 (tinted blue): the quantity of land purchased from the Maori (as at July 1953 1,469,700 and tinted pink and as at December 1853 3,168,600), the estimated quantity of available land (5,172,084), and the estimated quantity of waste land (2,161,317) as per Commissioner Donald Mclean's statement. The total of these lands is given as 10,502,001. A note on the map states that 'the contents of the purchases tinted blue are only approximated - not having been surveyed'. The land blocks identified include Ahiaruhe, Puketoi, Hapuka, Ahuriri, Mohaka, Whanganui and Rangitikei. Please note that the blue and pink tints on the map are indistinguishable due to the copy being in black and white. Map signed by the draughtsman, GF Swainson and by M Fitzgerald, surveyor in charge, 1853. Quantity: 1 map(s). Physical Description: Photographic copy, scale [1:1 267 200], 31 x 38 cm.
