The accompanying text is 'An excellent view of the Te Aute Lakes is obtained from the present line of railway between Napier and Waipukurau' An island in the middle of this lake was used during the Maori intertribal musket wars in 1818 as a refuge against Ngapuhi raids. Description: A group of war canoes racing, some with sails. In the centre of the group is the missionary schooner, Karere, flying a White Ensign. A headland is in the background. The war raid dated from the intertribal musket wars carried out by Ngapuhi in the 1820s and 1830s, and the expedition was on its way to Tauranga in 1833. Reprinted in the Quarterly papers of the Church Missionary Society in 1849. The image was also used to illustrate Rev. William Yate's 'An account of New Zealand' (London, 1835) opp. p. 184, with title The mission boat accompanying a New Zealand war expedition. Engraved by S. Williams. Engraved from a drawing by Henry Williams titled Expedition on its way to Tauranga in 1833.
