Description: View looking out to sea, with the Patea River's southern coast cliffs to the left, a steam moored at a sandhill on the south bank. In the right foreground are the remains of a sailing ship, broken in half. Soldiers are salvaging timbers from the vessel. The vessel may be the Alpha, a cutter wrecked off Patea in April 1865. The drawing is based on one by Hamley's superior officer, E. A. Williams 'Mouth of the Patea' [1865?] in the Hocken Library, on p. 115 of their now dismantled E. A. Description: Shows a view looking up the Huatoki Stream towards Mount Taranaki. There are houses on the slopes on either side of the stream, a stockade at the top of the hill at the right, and a waterwheel and mill on the left bank. A road leads along the left bank, and there is a bullock wagon, and a group of men and horses in the left foreground. The men carry guns, although a pair standing upstream could be fishing, and one man in the foreground could be carrying either a flag or a fishing net. Although this probably relates to an E A Williams image in the Hocken Library, it has similarities to the E A Williams watercolour at ATL B-139-006, showing the mill at the edge of the stream. Probably the Alpha Mill, described as being on the Huatoki Stream, by Ron Lambert of Taranaki Museum (see letter at AT 13/14/1, 14 May 1997). Based on an E A Williams watercolour. Description: Looking north along the coastline towards Maunganui, with ships in the harbour, infantry and cavalry on the beach to the left, a Maori canoe and a rowboat in the foreground, the rowboat being hauled out to sea off the mudflats by sailors. Description: Scene inside a pa, with soldiers on guard and seated on the ground, a white horse pulling a cart to the left. The watercolour is a likely to be a copy of a watercolour by Colonel Edward Arthur Williams and is almost the same, apart from the placement of the soldiers, as a watercolour by Williams in the Turnbull Library entitled Picket at Nukumaru, 30 Jan.y 65. Description: The curved bridge over Henui Stream, New Plymouth, with an armed soldier approaching by the road on the right, and another figure driving a carriage led by a pair of bullocks approaching on the left. Two buildings are on the skyline to the left. Copied by Hamley from a watercolour by his superior officer, E. A. Williams. Compare Williams' 'Henui Bridge [June 1865], (A-210-005), which is almost identical, except that Williams shows soldiers crossing the bridge, and no figure with bullocks. The buildings on the skyline are also somewhat different. The Williams watercolour has been dated to June 1865 by historian R. I. M. Description: The fortification on Marsland Hill at New Plymouth with a large hospital tent in front and many Maori and Pakeha in front of it. In the foreground, groups of Maori and Pakeha, including a man performing a challenge, with an axe. The occasion appears to be festive, with many flags strung up and families present, possibly after the cessation of hostilities at New Plymouth. Based on a watercolour in Edward Arthur Williams' sketchbook, called Taranaki (E-348-131/13l). There is also a watercolour of the same subject called New Plymouth 18 June 1864 by E. A. Description: The Waitotara River with military camps on both sides, smoke rising from the larger camp set low on the right bank and from the township or Maori kainga on the left bank. A group of soldiers is patrolling in the foreground. A few tents are also pitched high on the hill to the left, the site of the Weraroa Pa, although the Pa cannot be seen in this view Probably copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E.
