Exhibition caption reads - In 2001, Australian and New Zealand defence priorities diverged more sharply than previously. While John Howard's Australian government boosted defence expenditure and re-equipped strike elements in its airforce, Helen Clark's New Zealand government abandoned all pretence that the RNZAF was capable of a military role and concentrated on better equipping the army to play a peace-keeping role in trouble-spots like East Timor. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation.
