Description: The steamship `Tamahine' leaving Wellington on the 14th of November 1938. Taken from the deck of the Awatea, by an unidentified photographer. Inscriptions: Verso - By the number of cars on the deck one would suggest that holidays have started. This is taken frim the boat deck of the Awatea, the difference in size of the two ships is easily seen. 15/11/38 [probably the date of publication in the Evening Post newspaper] The steamship Tamahine was a Cook Strait ferry of 1989 tons. Description: The ferry Duchess in Wellington Harbour, photographed circa 1910s. Photographer unidentified. Ship was built in 1896. Provided a passenger ferry service in Wellington Harbour, and also towed sailing ships in ballast between Wellington, Lyttleton and Picton. In 1930 changed ownership and was taken to Auckland. There the ship provided a regular Auckland-Waiheke-Kawau Island sevice, and was also used for charter cruises around the Hauraki Gulf. During the Second World War was requisitioned and fitted out as a mine sweeper, then as an examination vessel in Rangitoto Channel. In 1946 after being declared surplus to requirements it was sold and broken up. (Information from Local History on Line, http://www.localhistoryonline.org.nz).
