Description: Photographs originally inside a journal written by Gilbert Marsden Beale while working as a tailor at the Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Featherston, Wairarapa, between circa 1943-1945, during World War II. Photographer unidentified, possibly Beale. Descriptions are written on the backs of the prints by Beale. Images are taken at three places just outside the camp's barbed wire fence. One is taken by No 2 gate and shows the hospital buildings in the distance. Another is taken outside the main gate. Another looks though the fence towards the mechanical workshop. Description: Murie describes Joosten's life since he came to New Zealand from Schleswig-Holstein about 1885, his subsequent career and the establishment of the company, Joosten and Murie, in 1907. Although naturalised in 1893, Joosten's life changed in 1918 when he was arrested as an alien and interned on Somes Island in 1918. Murie has supplied background information about Joosten and has used extracts from files held by National Archives to elaborate on the problems Joosten endured. Description: Diary compiled by Klingenstein of his experiences during World War Two as an internee on Somes Island under the 1940 Emergency Regulations. He briefly summarises his life as a New Zealander with a German name before his eventual internment and the experiences leading to it followed by entries (not daily) describing in detail the internees, staff, political feelings etc. He includes maps, drawings, plans, diagrams and newspaper articles. Klingenstein began writing the diary in 1946, nine months after his release from Somes Island in 1945, from notes he smuggled out. On 21 May 1946 he began compiling his experiences from 24 Feb 1941 to 21 May 1942, which part he had completed by 23 Oct 1949. On 4 Apr 1976 he began again summarising his experiences to the end of the war, including newspaper articles about aspects of the war, a copy of the Emergency Regulations and other documents. Later David Gee held the original diary and restricted access to it; in 2002, following Mr Klingenstein's death, David Gee and Ms Kate Jones agreed the original diary would be deposited with the Turnbull Library and the photocopy would be returned to the family.

Description: Largly New Zealand material and photographs of paintings of the war in the Pacific by Allan Barclay Barns-Graham (official war artist) and Oliver Arthur Gillespie. New Zealand material includes views of coastal defences, military training at various camps, prisoner of war camps, Home Guard, public military parades, sports, army personnel including portraits, guns, tanks and other weapons, repatriated soldiers, medical units, ministerial visits, the posthumous investiture of Lt Ngarimu with the V.C., and mechanical transport. Arrangement: This collection is made up of empty negative envelopes with captions some of which have file prints attached to them, and sheets of contact prints which are also captioned. All of the negative envelopes have the relevant negative numbers written written on them. They were scattered throughout the wax boxes in which the War History collection had been housed for the last eight years. In giving the collection a general order they have been sorted into their series groups. This collection contains material which has been called the "35mm" series. They have not been arranged in numerical sequence as yet (though some might be so arranged). Any negatives will be found in the 35mm registers at 16398 - 16509. (Feb 1995)

Became 2nd Lieutenant and was attached to 75th Light Brigade and was involved in training men. Mentions threat of Japanese landing. Recalls being transferred to Featherston Camp and journey which took 2 hours and 40 mins by train from Wellington. Reference to Charlie Gardiner. Describes officers mess and recalls barbed wire and first impressions of Featherston. Discusses the Japanese prisoners held at Trentham. Recalls not being there during the riot - arrived months later but was responsible for seeing that blood stained clothing was burned. Recalls hearing reactions of those who were at the camp during riot and the efforts he made to find out what happened to bodies and describes information received. Mentions some Japanese prisoners - Nakiama (no 1 boy), Adachi (a sub Lieutenant) and Oby (Obi). Describes Saturday morning parade when 100 Japanese prisoners marched down Main St, Featherston and type of work done by prisoners. Talks about prisoners escapes. Describes artefacts which he picked up. Reference to canes, card sticks and mahjong set. Mentions Court of Inquiry held into incident at Featherston and keeps a transcript of it. Refers to Keith Robertson who gave evidence at inquiry. Recalls end of war and Japanese marching out with reference to Sandy Ashton (an interrogater).
