Description: The starter of a horse race has pushed a button to let the woman jockey out of the gates first. At his side is a newspaper headlined 'Female to race males at Te Awamutu today.' Canadian jockey Joan Phipps was the first woman to ride against male jockeys in new Zealand and won first place on her mare Daphalee in her race at the Te Awamutu on 1 November 1977.
