Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Shows a river in the foreground, winding between wooded slopes. There is a fence and dwelling in the lower foreground, and a small hill with palisades in the middle distance. The view is from the pa, rather than showing it. According to the map accompanying Major Main's expedition against Te Kooti, March 1869 (reproduced in Judith Binney's "Redemption songs" (1995), page 158), Ahikereru or Ahikerera, where the pa was situated, is on the Whirinaki River, southest of Murupara. The title mentions "Capt Mair", but, according to Judith Binney's "Redemption songs" (1995), page 158, it was Major William Gilbert Mair (rather than Captain Gilbert Mair), who was involved in the action at Te Harema Pa. Description: Plots the Hauhau campaign and Te Kooti campaign from the New Zealand Wars. Shows central North Island and note reads "Land enclosed by yellow is that of the Maori King, boarded by the 'aukati' no European may cross on pain of death". Military engagements and massacres are identified across the map. Massacres are identified at Matawhero, Ohiwa Harbour, Whitecliffs and Waihi. Engagements are identified at Mohaka, Ngaatape, Puketapu, Turanga and Ahikerera Pa on the East Coast and Whakatane districts, and Rauparoa Pa, Otatau, Otoia, Wairou, Moturoa, Ruapuru and Te Ngutu o te Mana (identified as Tito Kowaru's own place). Shows "Nukumaru Pah taken 2 Feb 69". Orange lines represent Colonel Whitmore campaigns eg Campaign of Ngatapa Dec/Jan 1869 (Poverty Bay area), or Oct/Nov 1868 Whanganui area, April/ May 1869 Bay of Plenty area. Small yellow lines represent the New Zealand war battle campaigns by the ers and the New Zealand government against the Maori, especially those led by Colonel Whitmore eg Col. Whitmore's pursuit of prisoners July August 1868, St John's column Apr-May 1869, or Col. Whitmore Jan, Feb, April, May 1869 from Whanganui to New Plymouth. Shows overland road from Napier to Auckland. Some text on map e.g. "Whareongaonga, where the prisoners from the Chatham Islands landed in July 1860."
