The artist arrived in Wellington in August 1849, the year this painting was done. He and his family lived at the property Homewood in Karori while waiting for his house to be built. Description: View from inside Pipitea Pa, looking north up the harbour towards the Hutt Valley and the Rimutaka Ranges. In the left foreground, two people sit, wrapped in blankets on bare ground. The edges of the site are defined with palisades of varying heights. On lower ground to the right are a wharenui, a long low building with a single door in the side, and two whata or food storage buildings on poles. Note on verso: Selected to be exhibited in the Academy Gallery for the Chamber of Commerce centennial June 1956, but not shown because of lack of space. Description: An autumnal river view with two men on horseback on the left bank at the water's edge. Cattle can be seen on the right bank, which is substantially higher. The Rimutaka mountains can be seen in the distance. Toetoe bushes feature prominently in the foreground Dunbar Sloane catalogue shows title as 'Surveyors crossing the Waikato River'; however, given Barraud's whereabouts at the time the watercolour was painted, it is more likely to be the Hutt River. Description: A view from the top of the Rimutaka Hill, looking down over the road winding through dense bush towards the plains of the Wairarapa. A Maori family is leading a horse down the road. One tree to the left in the foreground is a rata in flower and there is a tree-fern on the right. The artist is incorrect in his statement about the Rimutaka Range being part of the Ruahine Range. It is part of the Tararua Range. The phrase 'anglice Waidrop' refers to the common nineteenth century English version of the Maori word Wairarapa.
