Description: Photographs relating to the family of Rev Basil Kirk Taylor. These are part of a larger collection which includes correspondence to and from members of the Taylor family, mainly Rev Basil Kirke Taylor and his wife Edith. There is a typeset letter from Rev Richard Taylor to his daughter Laura, 1847. Diaries and notebooks, mainly kept by Rev Basil Kirke Taylor, although the earliest ones were kept by Rev Richard Taylor and his wife Caroline. The diaries of Basil Taylor record his time in England before ordination, and later when he joined his father at the Wanganui Mission, and up until his premature death in 1876. The privately printed reminiscences of Richard Basil Taylor, the grandson of Rev Basil Taylor, entitled `Family recollections'. These memoirs give details of his missionary forebears, as well as describing his diplomatic career and own family. Description: View from the south bank of the Whanganui River, showing York Stockade, Rutland Stockade, Christ Church, Yankee Smith's Hotel, Gilfillan's house. Attributed by the vendor to Edward Arthur Williams although the style does not appear to be his and the view seems more likely to date from the 1840s than the 1860s. Williams visited Wanganui in 1864 and 1865. The church and both stockades were erected in the 1840s. Gilfillan left Wanganui in 1848 and Yankee Smith's Hotel was run by Alva G. Description: Shows the town of Petre or Wanganui, with its earliest houses, and Christ Church, the first church, at the left. The river lies beyond, with hills in the background. A small group of armed men can be seen in the left foreground. The buildings in the distance across the river appear to comprise Putiki Wharenui Pa, and, to the left, the house of Rev Richard Taylor This is the original watercolour for the handcoloured engraving that appears in Brees' "Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand", Plate 6, no 19. The artist may have added the group of soldiers at a later date. He left New Zealand in 1845, before British troops were present in the lower North Island. There are no soldiers in the engraving derived from this watercolour. The town of Whanganui or Wanganui was originally named Petre by the New Zealand Company. It reverted to its original Maori name in the 1854. Other Titles - Whanganui Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 163 x 226 mm.
