West Coast Mining album

Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. Description: Gold dredges, gold sluicing, and machinery associated with gold mining in the South Island. Includes a few photographs taken in Australia, particularly the Pioneer Tin Mine in Tasmania. Inserted in a pocket in the front of the album are 19 loose prints, chiefly showing various claims in the North Island, some of which are taken by H J Locke. Also named in these images are the Saxon Mine and Ivanhoe Mine. Pinafore Claim was located at Waiotahi, Thames. Cambria Claim was a gold mine located in Thames. Gold King Dredge was on the Clutha River near Roxburgh circa 1899. Title supplied by Library. Date range estimated partly on dates that dredges were known to be operating. Wheeler and son album 2

Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: Three coloured postcards, one of a old Maori woman dozing outside a house (identified as Ceylon Wickliffe's Great Aunt), a Maori girl described as the Arawa Belle (identified as Marie McFarland), and some Maori children playing in the lake at Ohinemutu; the seven men of the executive of the New Zealand Harbour Boards Conference seated outside a building; three photographs of a Maori event in a park, probably in Wellington, with tents pitched and participants wearing kakahu over European dress; two women in traditional dress next to a wood carving, one is holding a hoe; a hut at Hawk's Crag on the Buller River; a loaded cart passing through Porter's Pass; Wellington wharves seen from Oriental Parade; the Buller River; a group of men gathered round a table to sign a document; view from Mount Cook towards Mount Victoria with what are possibly brickworks in the foreground; and photographs of four petitions submitted in Greymouth. Provenance: Irene C Zachariah was the widow of Joseph Zachariah who operated the Zak studio in Wellington.
