Description: The story of Robert and Marie Francis who arrived in Otago in 1876 on the `Sir Lancelot' as cabin passengers. Both were well-educated and wealthy by many standards. Robert was described as a gentleman, Marie could read the Greek testament and play the piano. On arrival Robert worked as a clerk, commercial traveller, land and estate agent and finally music shop owner. The Francis family moved often, living first in Otago, then Nelson and finally Christchurch. They had a family of nine children. The essay details Robert's family background, arrival in the `Sir Lancelot', Dunedin of the 1870s-1890s, brief details about each of his children, education of daughter Caroline in Nelson, family memories of Robert and Marie, family heirlooms.
