Description: Interview with Barbara Hampton (nee Neill), born Wellington 1935. Describes growing up in Wilton Road, and her father William Arthur Neill's interest in Otari. Recalls family picnics there and the walking tracks of the time, possum trapping by her brothers, following the stream to the Karori cemetery, and other childhood exploits. Describes getting married in 1959 and then moving to Waipukurau, Upper Hutt, Island Bay, Rarotonga, Karori and Rarotonga again before returning to Wellington in 1983. Recalls researching Cockayne's grave at Otari and controversy over the type of monument to be erected. Discusses how she developed her interest in history, joined the Wadestown History Group in the 1990s, and how her interest in Otari's history developed. Reminisces about early Wilton and Wadestown identities including Ethel Curtis and Mr McKay (first caretaker of the bush), and the Sharp, Archibald, Kilminister and Wilton farms. Description: Research notes, drafts, clippings, photographs, and other material relating to shipping, especially vessels belonging to the Union Steam Ship Company, those associated with Wellington Harbour and with coastal shipping. There is also material on Auckland Harbour, research notes and material on Wanganui river steamers, and on Wellington Harbour reclamations, the harbour ferries and the Wellington tramway system. Research notes, clippings and drafts relating to `Early New Zealand steamers, Vol II' (unpublished). Source of title - Supplied Mr Wilkinson, a journalist for the Wellington Evening Post, served as shipping reporter. He was also a marine photographer and had an interest in Wellington history.
