Description: White describes life on board HMS `Mildura' while on a voyage to the Pacific Islands, including New Zealand, 24 Oct 1900 to 14 Jul 1902, and summarises from until Sep 1902. He recorded almost daily, noting his work schedule, stops made, places visited (mostly in New Zealand and Australia) and other events. Ports included Picton, and the Sounds, Auckland, Akaroa, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Norfolk Bay and Milford Sound and he describes reaction to the death of Queen Victoria in Jan 1901 and Naval Day celebrations in May 1901 at Neutral Bay, Sydney. Description: Account of voyage to Canterbury on Crusader with his brothers Francis and Henry, 1873-1874, and return voyage to England a year later on the Merope. Describes his stay in Christchurch, trips to Governor's Bay and Akaroa, to Hokitika via Arthur's Pass, trip to visit numerous sheep stations in South Canterbury, social events, cricket matches, balls, Professor Bickerton's lectures, Transit of Venus Expedition (lead by Major Palmer, R.E., chief astronomer), Canterbury runholders and settlers including Lysaght family, Thomas Potts (Ohinetahi), etc. Trip to North Island via Wellington, thermal region, Tauranga, Auckland, and return to Christchurch before leaving for England on the Merope in Jan 1875. Description: The journal covers the period 3 Nov 1839-22 June and 22 July 1840 and is written in the form of a series of letters to members of his family. It describes the voyage out to New Zealand and contains an account of Hemery's impressions of Wellington, Thames, Kororareka and of the Maori population. Source of title - Transcribed from title page John Hemery was captain of the `Bengal Merchant', which sailed from Glasgow on 3 Oct 1839 and landed settlers at Wellington on 20 Feb 1840.
