Date: 1880

From: McLean, Donald (Sir), 1820-1877 :Maps from papers

Reference: MapColl-832.395a/[ca.1880]/Acc.1975

Description: Sketch plan of Hooker Terrace and Banks St, Napier, and two unnamed roads, small numbered sections (one belonging to J Kelly), and three larger sections belonging to Dr Hitchings, 'Bp N.Z.' and Donald McLean. Believed to be a tracing of a subdivision of William Colenso's (Note his house marked "W.C." in centre right). Colenso refers to a tracing in his letter to McLean on April 22 (see MS-Papers-0032-0221). "A few days ago I gave you a Nat. news; promising you a tracing of the Land I am getting laid out at Napier, which I now enclose: the tracing is rather rough, but correct; the Land will not be opened for sale for 2 or 3 weeks (depending on the Surveyor), so that if you care to have any of the best sections (all 1/4 ac.), you will be in time. I consider the situation the best in the island, while it is retired & in the heart of Town. And as I (& Dr. H. and others) wish it to be respectable, I have planned it so as to have no thoroughfare, & given for a belt of Trees, &c.- 'Banks'- after Sir Jos. B. who came with Cook, & published (&, indeed, brought out Draughtsmen with him at his own expense!) & 'Hooker', after our N.Z. Flora Botanist." Historic information supplied by Ian St. George. Includes notes under sketch plan concerning future plans for the area. Title written on map in pencil. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Physical Description: Ink on paper, linen backed, 20 x 26 cm. Transfers: From Manuscripts & Archives - McLean, Donald (Sir), 1820-1877 Papers - MS-Papers-0032.
