Description: Transcriptions of letters from James Filer to his father and step-mother in the United Kingdom written while he was travelling on the SS `Borda' to Australia via South Africa; also one letter written to them from Westport Filer wrote in diary form describing the course of the voyage, activities and events on board the ship, various sightings from it, their time in Cape Town, and arrival in Australia; included in the transcript are copies of photographs showing the ship, passengers and other aspects of the voyage. The transcriber and editor, Hubert Filer, also divided the account into England to Cape Town, 4-23 Jun 1920, Cape Town to Durban, 25-28 Jun 1920, Durban to Adelaide, 5-22 Jul 1920, Adelaide to Melbourne, 31 Jul-1 Aug 1920, Sydney, 9 Aug 1920 and New Zealand, 22 Aug 1920. Description: Volume is a compilation of an original manuscript diary (1884-1885) with pencil and watercolour illustrations which has been copied and revised (1935). The diary has been rebound with the original manuscript pages removed to be replaced by typescripts. The original illustrations and title pages appear intact. The diary begins with the departure from England on 29 Aug 1884 of the travelling party aboard the `S S Doric'. The party includes Georgina Gertrude Anderson, her mother, sister and maid. There is a brief description of the voyage, shipboard life and ports of call (Cape Horn, Teneriffe and Hobart). Wellington is reached on 17 Oct 1884. The diary continues with details of a visit around Wellington township then recalls an adventurous journey to Foxton by coach, followed by a train ride to their destination in Wanganui. Next day the travellers continue to family properties in the Makirikiri Valley. The chief reason for the author's visit to New Zealand is for her sister's wedding on 20 Oct 1884 in Wanganui. From here she journeys with her mother to Wellington via the inland route through Marton, Palmerston North and Masterton. From Wellington they ventured aboard the steamer `Wairarapa' to Port Lyttelton, then onto Christchurch. The next big event is Christmas 1884 in Wanganui and the dairy reccounts their preperations for the celebrations and church service. The next section details the last adventure through the North Island by steamer, coach and train visiting New Plymouth, Auckland, Cambridge, Rotorua, the Blue and Green lakes, Lake Tarawera, Te Wairoa and Napier. Included in this passage is a detailed account of visiting the Pink and White Terraces (a year before the 1886 eruption). On 13 Mar 1885 the return journey was made to England aboard the `S S Rimutaka' via the Straits of Magellan. Mention is made of the many icebergs they sailed past and the stopover in Rio de Janeiro and their sightseeing trips on land. Diary ends 26 Apr 1885 with the arrival at the Albert Docks, Liverpool. The diary recounts an eight month travel experience to New Zealand. The author is in a party of four visiting New Zealand to attend the wedding of her sister Helen Anderson to William Forster Mills. Themes for the sketches are local tourist spots of interest, New Zealand fauna, icebergs in the Straits of Magellan, and ports of call during the voyage to and from New Zealand. Processing information: Archivists notes - The author notes she was a young woman on this trip and that she returned to New Zealand for another visit 20 years later. This typescript is indicated as being 50 years after the first trip and includes annotated corrections.

Description: Travel journal by Lighting who was the valet to the Hon Algernon Egerton. Diary begins on 31st October 1889. The first part of the journal describes the voyage via Cape Town and Hobart to Wellington on the SS Arawa, then onto Auckland on SS Patricia via Picton, Wellington, Napier and Gisborne. After a stay in New Zealand the party continues to Sydney then onto France aboard the steamer `Yarra'. Returns to London on the 7th May 1890 after a journey of seven and a half months. Inside cover includes two stamps "Remember Edith Cavell" (1915) and "Remember Lusitania" (1915). Rare account of a travel journey by a 19th Century servant, valet R Lighting. Also in the travelling party were Hon Egerton, his wife and her maid, 18 year old Marquess of Downshire and his valet, Jack Cackswell, and Dr Kingsley. Accompanying material - Notes from bookseller. Description: Comprises one World War One diary documenting personal experiences of Dudley James Frederick Jeune, service number 41403, from 31 December 1916 to 31 December 1917. Part of 25th Reinforcements, NZFA. Covers the time period in a New Zealand army camp prior to leaving for war, the voyage on SS Turakina via Freemantle, Sydney, Sierra Leone, to arrival in Plymouth, England, leave and camp life in England, arrival in Boulogne, France, life at the front, working with horses and war action as part of 13th Battery, 3rd Brigade, New Zealand Field Artillery (NZFA), and a snowy Christmas and New Year 1917. Diary includes continuation of date entries at the front of the diary, plus addresses, financial notes, lists of ships, the military identification details for Jeune. Also includes diagram of wiring for a DIII field telephone. Accompanying note with diary identifies that the diary was given to "Dud" by his parents on 15th Jan 1917. Quantity: 1 volume(s).
