Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Roger James Cotton; land documents; history of family and property (including `Cotton family' from printed publication (p524)); photographs The original owner of the land in Waipori District (formerly Tuapeka County) was Thomas Dickson who was granted 15 acres by the Crown in 1872. He died in 1873 and the land passed to his widow Margaret (nee Atkinson) who remarried Robert Cotton in 1875. The land was transferred to Robert Cotton in 1891. At the time of the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award in 2005 the farm was owned jointly by brothers Roger James and Stuart William Cotton (great-grandsons of Robert Cotton). Hilliker was travelling in the single men's compartment and his brief daily entries record the ship's progress, vessels sighted, weather and events on board. He arrived at Port Chalmers on 9 Jan and took the steamer to Oamaru, his final destination, arriving on 20 Jan 1875. Also contains discharge papers dated Oct 1877; an annotated copy of `The Cruise of the Cachalot' by Frank T Bullen published in 1899 and an annotated proof of a galley for a newspaper article, ca 1930s, reporting on Mackay's life and his claim that Bullen's 1899 book was in fact based on the Splendid.
