Description: Scene aboard the Champion timber boat for Nelson from Wellington, with families bedded down on deck, 1852. A curtain in the middle divides some groups from others. The families appear to be lying in the bow of the ship. Some are already asleep, others are awake. One woman on the right is breastfeeding a baby. There are about 25 people lying down. Pearse has inscribed the front left figure as 'I myself' and the seated woman immediately beyond him as 'Scotch neighbour' Inscriptions: Album page - above image - title and date continue: the only kind of craft plying between these ports in these days and shame to the skipper for the accommodation. However in the next run from Sydney to New Zealand the Champion went down with all hands - the Skipper and crew were never heard of again. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: The left side shows a programme of songs and piano solos, performed on the "Gothic" by Mrs Herapath, Mr W S Inman, Miss K Smith, Mr E G Parrot, Miss M J Jollie, Mr R Wilson, Mrs Parrot, Mr Waymouth, Mrs J R Skeet, Mr Pryce Jones, Mr Howlison, Mr Gaunt. Apart from Mr Inman (ship's purser) and Mr Waymouth these were all saloon passengers on board the "Gothic", leaving London on 30 August 1901. The right side shows a cartoon of passengers disembarking at Somes Island where they were to be quarantined. The cartoonist is C.K.S., likely to be passenger Mr C Kingsley Smith. Description: Shows passengers on the deck of the ferry steamer Wakatipu on Foveaux Strait. The passengers are variously promenading, admiring the view, reading a newspaper or a book, or sitting and talking. A lifeboat can be seen at an upper level of the ship. A preliminary pencil drawing of the same scene is held at E-147-041 'S S Wakatip - Stewart Island trip on deck, 25/12/96 [sic]. The way some people enjoy themselves, see back for the way other people enjoy themselves'. The back shows a seasick passenger lying in a bunk. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: Shows a view of three men on the deck of the Crusader, which sailed from London in October 1872 and arrived in Lyttelton in January 1873. Two of the men are painted in mostly grey-black hues, but the man in the foreground has on a brown double-breasted jacket and fawn trousers, and a black hat. He sports a thick black beard and smokes a pipe. It might be assumed that this is a picture of George Hildebrand Alington on his passage to New Zealand.
