Description: The McMenamen homestead, Terawhiti, during the search for survivors from the Penguin, which was wrecked on 12 February 1909. A group of searchers may be seen in the background, and a photographer may be seen in the open doorway of the farm shed in the centre background. Photograph taken by S C Smith of Wellington. The photographer who may be seen with his tripod in the doorway of the farm shed in the background is probably Joseph Zachariah (1867-1965), who practiced in Wellington as Zak Studios. Wellington The `Penguin' was built by Messrs Todd & McGregor, in Glasgow in 1864 and was operated by the Union Steam Ship Co from 1879. In February 12, 1909, she struck a rock in Cook Strait, foundered, and 75 lives were lost.
