Description: Photographs of construction projects undertaken by Hansford & Mills Construction Company. The most important section consists of views of Parliament Buildings in Wellington, with a large number of images, both exterior and interior. Much of the detail relates to the marble columns and veneer, the marble sourced from the Kairuru Quarry in the Takaka Hills. Interior views show details of various areas, including the Legislative Council Chamber, the House of Representatives, the Maori Committee Room, the lobby for the members' lounge, and marble decoration in the main vestibule, the first floor, and the staircase. There are a number of images of the Kairuru Quarry, showing methods of quarrying the marble, transportation of the marble to Wellington, and machinery used for cutting and shaping the stone once it had arrived in Wellington. One scene also shows the incline at the old quarry at Sandy Bay. Other buildings, all only exterior views, or views of steel construction in early stages, include the State Fire Insurance Building (Featherston Street), Magnus Motors (Wakefield Street), the steelyard in Cable Street, the Ford Building (for Colonial Motor Company), and the Wellington Gas Company buildings, all in Wellington. Also two views of the Christchurch branch of the Wellington Woollen Company. Description: Includes views New Zealand, Pacific and Australia, including images of indigenous houses and plantations, and a series of 12 studio tableau portraits of Aboriginal Australians, taken by John William Lindt in 1873-1874. Kai Colo (Fijian people) - name for the people who live in the mountainous interior of Fiji. It's literal meaning is something like "mountaineer". This information was given by Dr Vicki Lukere (Luker), specialist in South Pacific history, Victoria University, 1997. A series of 12 studio tableau portraits of Aboriginal Australians by John Wiiliam Lindt, including three not found in this album, are at Library reference PA1-q-1317 Quantity: 1 album(s). Physical Description: Photograph album. Provenance: Written comments in the album indicate that it might be associated with Commodore J Goodenough RN, who was appointed as a commissioner by the Crown to investigate the events that led to the annexation of Fiji. This album was compiled by an unidentified member of the Australian Division of the Royal Navy based at Sydney in the mid 1870s. The Australian Naval Station was responsible for policing the Pacific and supporting Britain's interests in the region. The one date associated with the album (1875) as well as some of the images, suggest that it was compiled soon after the cession of Fiji to the British Crown. The two ships associated with the album, HMS Blanche and HMS Pearl, were both stationed at Sydney and both were involved with events in Fiji before and during cession. HMS Pearl was Commodore Goodenough's flagship. He was the officer in charge of the Australian Naval Station at that time. He also played an important political role in the process of cession in Fiji. In the album he and his officers are shown swimming on Ovalau. The compiler of the album on the other hand, seems to have been personally associated with HMS Blanche. There are two pictures of this ship in the album as well as pictures of memorials erected by the captain and crew to one of their members. HMS Blanche had been active against the traffic in cheap labour in the South Pacific. In 1873 her paymaster, Lieutenant Nettleton, had acted as temporary British Consul in Fiji after the recall of E B March.

Description: Two photographs of a Maori picnic at Pigeon Bush on the occasion of the settlement of the ownership of Lake Wairarapa. The first shows a large crowd of men, women and children with Seddon on the right in front of a two-storey wooden house. The second is of the crowd under the trees, one with a concertina, and three men holding up eels they had caught. A photograph of Members of Parliament in the debating chamber. The names given are: Symes, O'Maara, A L D Fraser, J Palmer, Hall, Field, Witheford, Wi Pere, Bennet, Kaihu, Duncan, MIlls, Ward, Cairncross, Stevens, Hogg, F M Smith, Carroll, McGowan and Hall-Jones. A photograph of the opening by Seddon of the Ballance Bridge described as "over Mangahau". It was taken by P De Loree & Son a photographer based in Pahiatua which may indicate the approximate location. The crowd in the foreground is mostly of children and the bridge has been decorated with plants. A photograph of Seddon, Mrs Hogg and Alexander Wilson Hogg opening a bridge. It is captioned at the bottom left "Mangainoka 4.3.1896" but this location has not been identified and the name on the reverse is illegible. Two photographs by Winzenberg of Seddon and others at a Liberal rally near Greytown and at a picnic possibly on the same occasion. Description: The main subject areas include ships, birds (especially sea birds), trees, native forest, places in the form of pastoral landscapes, coastal views, towns and historical buildings. There are sequences of Maori and Pakeha doing crafts, mainly weaving and dying. One sequence of Maori weaving records the process from the cutting and preparation of the flax to the finished product. There are also family portraits and groups, and photographs of friends. A number of photographs were taken to build up a resource of natural textures and patterns such as driftwood, river boulders, and clouds. The subject range of the collection can be accessed through George Bull's card index. The original envelope sequence numbers relating to this can be followed in the negative registers.
