Description: Letters and papers relating to Sergeant Gordon Christie Dunn (1912-1942), together with a copy of his daughter Vivienne Hayward's memoir `Finding Gordon - A love story' (published by the author in 2008). It is based on the edited correspondence between her mother and father during the early years of World War II. These private letters provide an insight into her mother Joan's life at home in Invercargill and her father's war experience in Egypt and as a prisoner-of-war in Crete and Germany up until his accidental death in Stalag VIII-B in Feb 1942. Description: Primarily records of World War One service, comprising scrapbooks of correspondence, reports, documents, etc. Served as Captain with British army in France until captured at Vimy Ridge, May 1916; later served with Inter-allied Commission and British Red Cross Society, dealing with Russian prisoners in Germany. Unpublished autobiography, business correspondence, photographs, clippings, Juriss family records. Description: The letters were edited by the author to delete references to family matters. What remains is a detailed description of the conduct of the War as seen from Rogers' perspective. His duties involved managing traffic to and from the front and collecting intelligence. This kept him in close contact with the New Zealand Army during the various campaigns it was involved in in France. Rogers pays particular attention to his dealings with both Corps and regimental officers and men. Relationship complexity - Further photographs by Stanley are in the photographic collection of James Henderson, Photographs, chiefly relating to Stanley Dick Rogers, a Captain in New Zealand Mounted Rifles during World I, PACOLL-8637 Rogers worked at the Railway Workshops in Petone. He joined the Volunteers in 1902 and was frequently seconded to the Defence Department. In Aug 1914 he was appointed Assistant Commandant on Somes Island. In February 1916 he left New Zealand aboard the `Rangiotu' with the 3rd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade for Egypt and subsequently landed in France in May 1916. In August 1916 he was seconded as a field officer, II ANZAC Army Corp (later Headquarters XXII Corps) and appointed Road and Traffic supervisor. His work as a plant pathologist and tree and forest management specialist with the DSIR and Forestry Institute is not covered in this collection. Source of title - Supplied Harry Jacks was born in Rumania and after gaining qualifications in plant research in France, came to New Zealand in the 1930's, where he worked with the DSIR and the Forestry Institute. During World War II he served with 2NZEF in Greece and on Crete, trained commandos and served on special operations in Yugoslavia and Greece. Retired to his farm at Havelock North in the 1970s. Description: Four photograph albums compiled by Robert Henry (Harry) Fulton relating to his World War I service between 1916-1919 with New Zealand 12th Reinforcements, and with the New Zealand Army Service Corps (NZASC) based at New Zealand Base Kit Stores unit at Sling Camp, Bulford, England. Many photographs taken by Fulton. Some prints are taken by other unknown photographers as indicated by caption 'loaned negatives', and as they show campaigns, such as Gallipoli, in which Fulton did not serve. Images show his time with the 12th Reinforcements; from the journey from New Zealand on HMNZT 'Ulimaroa' and 'Ivernia' troop ships to Egypt in 1916, camp life in England as part of the NZASC, and activities whilst on leave during wartime and post war. Particularly shows family and home in Ireland and sight-seeing photographs from around Egypt and Great Britian, including New Zealand soldiers at Stonehenge. Prints have captions on the album pages; some images are inscribed on the print. Fulton has often arranged images of unrelated locations and activities on individual album pages. Description: The collection comprises four folders on Robert Martin's career as a post office employee and telegraphist, while the rest consists of papers, scrapbooks and newspaper cuttings relating to his military service during World War II in North Africa, Italy, and the Solomon Islands with the Field Ambulance service of the New Zealand Medical Corps. Correspondence with his brother, Martin, and his sister, Valerie, are included, as is correspondence with two of his comrades in the Field Ambulance. Also included is a typed translation of a Japanese diary which he acquired during the Solomon Islands campaign, probably on Mono in the Treasury Islands, and a typed copy of the diary and other papers of his friend, Colin John Arroll, who also served with the Field Ambulance. Description: The autobiography, in two books, finishes in 1938, although an outline for a proposed third book to 1951 is included. Source of title - Transcribed title Cunningham gained extensive practical experience in sheep farming, fruit growing and forestry in New Zealand and Australia before serving with NZEF at Gallipoli in World War I. He joined the Department of Agriculture as an orchard instructor in 1917 and studied at Victoria University College in the 1920s. He represented New Zealand at the First Imperial Mycological Conference in London in 1924 and in 1928 was put in charge of the Mycological Laboratory, Plant Research Station, Palmerston North. He visited North American and British institutions in 1929 and was instrumental in the reorganization of agricultural research when, in 1936, plant research was transferred to the DSIR.
