Description: Views mostly in and around New Plymouth but including clergymen gathered for Archdeacon Govett's jubilee in 1898, crowds in Pukekura Park for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubliee in 1897 and a Floral Fete in 1896, a homestead called Tokotahi near the Tiraumea River in Pahiatua County, the old mountain house on Mount Taranaki, and an area called Grant's Braes (now Waverley) in Dunedin. Description: Family photographs of the William Hughes Field family, their home in Everton Terrace, Wellington, with views of Wellington and the harbour taken from various streets nearby. One group of images taken from Kelburn Park in February 1897 show the ship (with an escorting flotilla) in which Lord Glasgow was leaving New Zealand after his term as Governor of New Zealand. A few images show scenes in Christchurch. The yacht `Sunbeam' (privately owned by Lord Brassey) is shown in Wellington Harbour in a number of views. Several photographs shows areas on the outskirts of Wellington. Views fom Pukerua of the hills to the north and Kapiti Island; Otaihanga (with one of a Maori family at their home); Upper Hutt, showing Mr and Mrs Sarjeant's backyard, Mr and Mrs Barber's orchard, and two views of a farm owned by Mr [Martin?]; the coast at Island Bay, and fishermen and their huts at Island Bay. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: Album of images taken by various photographers, some of whom are identified, probably between 1870 and 1899. Views of New Zealand (tourist scenes of the South Island include the West Coast, Queenstown-Lakes District; and of the North Island include thermal areas around Lake Rotomahana, Ohinemutu, and Wairakei). These are interspersed with scenes in the West Indies, India, and Australia. Names of places shown in the album are listed above. Pages 29-30 show images of "SS Tarawera" in Wet Jacket Arm. Pages 30-32 show views of one or possibly two ships. The names in pencilled captions are not clear. The ship on page 30 appears to have the name RMSS Rune [or Rane, or Rome], but on page 32 that name is crossed out and appears to be RMSS Shamun? However the name on page 31 appears more like RMSS Shannon, and photographs of the Shannon appear very like the full image in this album on page 30, in which the ship is sailing through "the canal". Many photographs show groups of men and women, many of whom are identified, camping and climbing in the Southern Alps area. Also shown are scenes of The Hermitage at Mount Cook (one of which shows a bullock team for transporting stores, and another which shows Frayne's coach leaving Mount Cook); views of the Birch Hill Station; and Ball Hut (with a curtained-off area as a "ladies' compartment"). Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s to 1871. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in this album at p. 51) The Thames goldfields are shown in a number of images, including some with captions Shortland and Grahamstown (now part of Thames); the Moanataira [i.e. Moanatairi] wire tramway, with the Rainbow Hotel nearby; Hunt's claim (known as the Shotover Mine); the Missouri Battery; the Bank of New Zealand building at Grahamstown; and miners' huts. The timber industry is shown with kauri logs being transported by bullock teams and awaiting transport by water. Photographs associated with Maori include military outposts at Terewera (i.e. Tarawera) and Ormond; "Kawiti's Runanga, or court houses, now `tapu', Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 21); "limestone caves at Waiomeo [sic], Bay of Islands; the burial place of the Mangakahia tribe. Strictly tapu" (p. 22); "Group at Waimeo feast, Bay of Islands" (p. 20); "Native feast - or bone-scraping at the burial of the remains of several chiefs at Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 46); "Waipawa Valley, Poverty Bay, scene of the massacre by Te Kooti" (p. 47); "Here the moa feet impressions were found, Poverty Bay, Sept. 1871, D.L.M." Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken in the South Island, except for one view of `Woodcroft', the home of Dr John Kinder in Arney Road, Remuera from about 1880 until his death in 1903. Many of the South Island views are related to early surveyors William Duncan Ross McCurdie and his wife Olga McCurdie, and Ernest Herbert Wilmot, who were surveying land near Tahakopa, Tautuku, McLennan Valley and the Catlins. Several show the homes of early settlers in the Tahakopa Valley. Of particular interest are a view of women voting at their first election at Tahakopa (28.11.1893); one of an early settler's first home at Tahakopa; the first boat sailing up to Mr McCurdie's camp; and a group of horsemen on a beach, parading before going to war (1914).
