Description: Holograph letter and photocopy of letter to Mary Lawrence, `My dear little girl', from Iza, written from Sydney in 1910 following the writer's experiences in New Zealand, with Edith Hill, beginning with the wreck of the `Waikare' in Dusky Sound. She writes of Dunedin, Rotorua, Rotomahana, Taupo, the Waikato River, the King Country, and briefly mentions going down the Wanganui River, through Wellington, Marlborough, Nelson and back to Dunedin. In particular she describes their trip from Rotorua focusing on the Gisborne area, meeting with Tuhoe, and the possibility of meeting Rua - which they did. She noted it was a trip few Pakeha women had made. She wrote of various encounters they had at Maungapohatu, their living conditions, social interaction, events, unusual experiences with the group etc. The writer also mentions that she was compiling a cookery book which she hoped to shortly have published Source of title - Supplied by Library Quantity: 2 folder(s). 0.02 Linear Metres. Description: Comprises diaries kept by North relating to his life at Te Whaiti, as well as earlier and later periods. Also includes one diary kept by Jessie North; 7 volumes of business records of his father, Francis North, a draper of Paeroa (one made over into a scrapbook); two books of medical studies notes; a travel diary for 1978; prescription records; record of car mileage and maintenance; minutes of the Adult Education group of Te Whaiti (1950-1953), minutes of an unidentified marae committee, and film club notes (1959-1961) Dr North's diaries describe his daily life and activities, concentrating on practicalities rather than medical matters. He recorded family activities, noted the time he woke up, going to and taking part in church affairs, including taking services, and similar topics. His visiting records note the name of the patient but not his/her condition. Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Museum of New Zealand and Auckland Museum have copies of `Carved houses of the Urewera' by North North practised as a doctor based at Te Whaiti (1947-1971) and the bulk of the collection reflects this. Description: Contains diary entries by Keys re his travels through the Bay of Plenty and Horowhenua districts on business as a Native Land Agent; there are detailed descriptions of the countryside and towns which Keys travelled through, and discussions about the people he met; there are also discussions about Maori practices and customs that he encountered and his impressions of them. There are also notes about native flora and fauna and the liquor trade, and a number of photographs of people (mainly from Te Arawa and Ngati Raukawa), scenery and marae, taken by Keys according to the text (each is dated). Also contains copies of various manuscripts (in Maori) submitted to Keys by Maori informants, and information about the history of Rangiatea at Otaki Also includes stories, written in Maori, from the Ngati Raukawa tribe; "The story of Uenuku-kopako and Kapu- Manawawhiti"; "The death of Tukemata"; and a copy of a letter from Riapo Puhipi (Leopold Busby) about an exchange of gifts between Te Rauparaha and Poroa, a chief of Ahipara. Includes photographs of the old Otaki school house; Kahurangi Taipua; Raukawa meeting house (all on p.73), and Tungia Te Ao (pp.74 & 100).
