Description: Shows harbour scene form Commercial Bay looking towards the North Shore and Rangitoto Island. The prison hulk Marion is to the right of a sailing ship on the harbour and there are houses in the foreground, with the house on the left marked as belonging to Mr Jones, probably Mr Humphrey Jones Attribution on stylistic grounds. Sails on ships were painted in by John Lawford, Auckland art dealer, before he sold the painting to Dr Hogg. He based his work on the sailing ship in Charles Heaphy's watercolour "Bream Head", owned by the Library.. Description: Shows a view looking across bracken, to the back of the first Government House (built 1842, burnt 1848), with the Waitemata and North Head in the background. There is a sailing ship in the right distance, and a waka with two triangular sails on the harbour. Two Maori sit in the bracken, and their is a goat grazing in the left foreground. In the right centre background is a raised storehouse (?), and there is a clump of flax in the right foreground. The hill above Devonport has a flagstaff. Three yachts and a small ship on the Waitemata Harbour and Devonport with houses along the waterfront, North Head and Rangitoto across the water. Exhibited in Alfred Sharpe, touring to Auckland City Art Gallery, Museum of New Zealand and Dunedin Public Art Gallery, 1993. Reproduced as a Turnbull Library Print, 1983 cf B-051-005, a lithograph based on a similar view from the New Zealand Observer and Free Lance of 20 February 1886, p. 20. A note on the verso, printed in black felt-tip pen explains: "This painting was given to my grandfather Oliver Mays by A. Sharpe who used to go to visit every Sunday for dinner. My grandfather was able to talk the deaf and dumb language by fingers. [Sharpe was profoundly deaf]. The old house on the Devonport waterfront was lived in by us when my late husband A. R. D. Fairburn was alive. Jocelyn (Mays-Fairburn) Young."

Description: View looking down Princes Street towards Emily Place, with St Paul's church at the foot of the street, the harbour beyond. The long low house to the right of the church would have been that of Brigade-Major Joseph Greenwood. To the extreme left, the original Wood's Royal Hotel can be seen, with its verandah partly enclosed with lattice. The two-storey building next door to it is the Royal Masonic Hotel, and beside that, the Union Bank of Australia. Various men, women and children are standing or sitting in the street, and a carriage drawn by two horses, carrying four people, rides up the street According to Una Platts' 'The lively capital: Auckland 1840-1865', the image is given the title 'Princes Street, Auckland, 1849, with Colonel Wynyard's carriage'; this title does not appear on the original and may come from family knowledge Wynyard made two versions of the scene; the other is privately owned.
