Description: Shows a coastal mine with a tall metal pulley rig and shed on a small island at the end of a wharf. The pulley at the top of the rig is linked by ropes to two buildings on the shore at the right, where there is also a smokestack. In the right foreground lies a rusted Lancashire boiler, which has possibly been condemned and discarded. Description: Shows figures on three horses dismounting at hut in centre left background. Hut appears to be of wood, with wooden chimney, and iron roof. A cart approaches in right distance. The title begins with 'and reach the hut' so is presumably a continuation of information in a diary or on another picture. Dated around 1890 as this is assumed to be the exterior of Mrs Birley's establishment shown in A-169-032. She is listed in Wises as a hotel-keeper in Queenstown during the 1880s, and then at Glenorchy in 1890-91. In 1892, J.K. Birley is listed as the hotel-keeper of Mt Earnslaw Hotel, Glenorchy, which may be a grander establishment than this one! Description: Shows a bush clearing with tall trees at left and right, beside a thatched cottage whose roof extends on the left side almost to the ground. There is a slab chiney on the near side, and to the right a woman stands beside a barrel. There is another low thatched hut at the left. In the left foreground lies a tree trunk. There is a solitary tree fern behind the house. Louis E Ward's "Early Wellington" (1928) notes on page 300, that a Mr Russell (spelt with a double l) was living at Taita in 1852 (quotes the 'Australian and New Zealand gazette' for 12 June 1852). Description: A scene at the base of the foothills of Mount Taranaki, showing a simple farmhouse with a smoking chimney in the foreground right, and with a smaller outbuilding behind it. A farmer is seated in the paddock to the viewer's left of the house, amongst a number of sheep, all of which have red markings on their backsides. The house has a low, densely- wooded hill rising behind it, and beyond that, more rain-forested hills stretching towards Mount Taranaki The farmhouse depicted could be the same house situated behind James Robson's farmhouse in B-187-018, but this is uncertain Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows in foreground a circular island of garden with a grass border, in the centre of a circular driveway. A gardener kneels to tend plants at the left, and a dog sits keeping him company. At the right is an herbaceous border, in front of the partly obscured Wellington Terrace. Across the Terrace is a wooden house with finials, brick chimney, shingled roof, and a "To Let" sign in the window. Beyond this in the right background is Wellington Harbour and the flat area of Lower Hutt. In the centre background behind the circular garden, is the shingle roof, finial, brick chimney, and H-shaped metal chimney-pot of a neighbouring house, possibly that owned in 1878/79 (see Wise's Post Office Directory) by Joseph Nancarrow. Beyond is a pier projecting out from Lambton Quay, with Midland Point beyond. In the left background is the Boys' Grammar School (with spire) on Clifton Terrace and further north St Mary's Church, Hill Street; on the crest of the hill on the top left now the area occupied by the suburb of Wadestown, is Captain William Barnard Rhodes' house, "The Grange". Sometimes entitled: "A Wellington resident's house and garden, Flagstaff Hill, above Boulcott Street, looking North towards the Hutt Valley" or "Wellington from Flagstaff Hill". Previously thought to be a view from Mr Hays' residence. Sharp's residence was on the upper side of the Terrace, probably just north of the present join with Salamanca Road. According to notes compiled by B. M. Igglesden, grandson (TL 3/1/1, 1 August 1985), the gardens of the property extended from Mount Street to Everton Terrace, and when the estate was later cut up, 25 homes were built on the land, including Sir Robert Stout's home. See also notes at TL 3/1/1, 8 May 1985, or the Evening Post of 29 September 1928, for notes about the Sharp household (and other houses on the Terrace). There is a cabbage tree in left foreground, and two figures stand to the right of the house, whose sloping chimney is smoking. Description: Four canoes pulled up on a beach, one shown with a figurehead and with three Maori men seated in it. To the left are two small cottages, one of raupo, the other with a window, front door and bench outside, on which a man is seated. Both cottages have chimneys. The exhibition title is taken from Ashworth's journal where he misquotes from John Milton's poem "Paradise Lost": "The world was all before me / where to choose my place of rest". Description: Shows a thatched cottage at the left, with a large smoking slab chimney beside it, on a sloping lawn beside the sea. There is a rain barrel beside the cottage, and a red flowering plant (possibly a rose) is enclosed in a small picket enclosure at the right. In the background are two small peaked promontories on the Kaikoura Peninsula. It is possible that the enclosed flowering plant may be growing on the grave of Sarah Ann Riley who died in 1865, and was buried close to her home (See J M Sherrard's "Kaikoura; a history of the district" (Kaikoura, 1966).
