Description: A class locomotive (NZR Number 161), with two men standing beside, one of whom is the photographer himself, leaning against the locomotive, on the right. Photographed taken by A P Godber, probably at Addington workshops, Christchurch. Source of descriptive information - Formerly described as being at Petone, but information from Library client states this locomotive never operated in the North Island and the location is probably the Addington workshops. NZR locomotive no. 161 (4-6-2) was built by New Zealand Railway Workshops at Addington, Christchurch, in 1906, and was sold in 1964. The two men standing inside the cab are identified as "Leadbetter" and "J Hosie in Godber Album (Vol 108, p 62. PA1-q-101). Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1912 and 1949 at Lower Hutt. An original print from this image is in Godber Album Vol 108, p 62 (PA1-q-101) This image is reproduced in "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart (p 100), which says where the photograph was taken. Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom centre - Wg Loco 492. Cyls 14"x22". Driv. wheels 3'9". Steam pressure 200 lbs. Grate area 16.9 sq ft. Total heating surface 739 sq ft. \"Wg\" 492 entered service on the 21st of August 1912 and was written off in February 1956 (Information from the 'Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971' by W G Lloyd, 1974, page 64.)
