Wheeler and son album 2

Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: Shows Marion Sim, wife of John Sim, feeding horses. The public house, or hotel was run by brothers John and Andrew Sim. Exhibited in 'Two centuries of New Zealand landscape art' Exhibition at Auckland City Art Gallery, 2 February - 22 April 1990. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. According to N.Z. Historic Places, no. 46, Dec 1993, p. 17 "There has been a public house at Mohaka since 1859 or before. The first was established by John and Marion Sim on the south side of the mouth of the Mohaka river, opposite the large Maori community centred round the Te Huke and Hiruharama Pa. In 1859, when the postal service was established between Napier and Wairoa, the pub was already there. The Sims were running a ferry and operated the post office from the pub. Description: Shows the early accommodation house or hotel at the head of the Pukaki River, the southern end of Lake Pukaki, the ferry over the Pukaki River, part of Ben Ohau and the Liebig Ranges and Mount Cook in the distance. A horse and cart are being moved over the river on the ferry. Compare a photograph of a very similar view supposedly "from a watercolour by E. Norman, entitled [Lake Pukaki showing original accommodation house, since burnt down] Title from ink inscription on secondary support, below image. By the same artist as A-049-036. The hotel was built in 1863. The ferry was built in 1876. Both hotel and ferry were moved to the site shown here at the source of the Pukaki River in 1878. The accommodation house was enlarged in 1885. It caught fire in 1891, but was rebuilt. The site was bridged in 1895. The watercolour must date from between 1878 and 1895, perhaps from the middle period of about 1885. Edmund Norman, referred to in the similar view held by the Library (NON-ATL-0185) died in 1875, the year before the ferry was built and 3 years before the accommodation house was moved to this site. He could not have been the artist of this view (A-049-035) or the related view. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Looking inland towards a range of hills and mountains, including Mount Taranaki at some distance, with a small unoccupied canoe and a dinghy with a sail carrying three people from one bank to the other. Likely to be a river in South Taranaki, or North of Wanganui, although not as far north as the Patea River, given the small size of Mount Taranaki in the distance. Possibly the Waitotara River. [Creator unknown] :Sketch of a plan for a ferry across the River Hutt [ms map]. [1840-43]

Description: The main map is of part of the east and west banks of the Hutt River showing shingle and sand areas and the directional flow of the current. The site of the ferry crossing includes the approaches to the ferry, the line of chain and the centre of the line of road laid down on the selection plan. A fence is marked. The second map is of the traverse section of river shewing ferry boat. Levels of the west and east banks of the river and supposed level of the highest flood are shown. Measurements in feet are marked for the level of the highest flood and the ordinary level of water. Includes approaches to the ferry. A typewritten note mounted on the map under the title states: Plan of the ford probabaly used for four years between 1868 and 1872 during which time there was no bridge over the river. For location see jubilee book. Handwritten note under title states: The ferry boat to be constructed of rough timber but strongly fitted, 32 feet long by 14 feet wide, out and out. To be formed square with double bottom and capable of supporting 15 tons. The platform to be about 12 inches above the level of the water when the boat is loaded. The sides and bottom to be of 4 inch planking, 6 inch timbers and knees. To have strong flaps hung at each end with chains, and bulwarks at the sides. To prepare a large wheel for windlass and all other fittings for same. To fix proper sheares and leaders for main chains. To fix a small pump in boat. Numerous pencilled handwritten notes state: Before first bridge. Believe 1840-43, L.H. For probable location, see D.P. 89. The passengers are variously promenading, admiring the view, reading a newspaper or a book, or sitting and talking. A lifeboat can be seen at an upper level of the ship.
