Description: Certificate shows an arrangement of text, with a dove of peace at the top, and two seated angels flanking the Holy Bible at the bottom. At the sides are New Zealand scenes: Maori beside a lake with tree fern at the left, and at right a church and cabbage tree in front of a snowy mountain, possibly Mt Taranaki. Denomination may be Presbyterian or Methodist. Other certificates awarded to Mary McKenzie include some from the New Zealand Methodist Sunday School Union, but there is also published evidence that the Otago Sunday School Union may have been linked to the Presbyterian Church. Description: The back and front cover spread of what is actually a programme for "Carmen up to data" in Christchurch in 1893, shows scenes from the show "Forty thieves", which had played the previous year at the Princess Theatre Melbourne. The illustrations mainly feature a beautiful dancing girl. In one scene she pours oil into a jar containing a person. In another she dances, watched by an admirer in a tree. "Carmen up to data" was a musical burlesque, a spoof of Bizet's 1875 opera "Carmen". It premiered at the Gaiety Theatre London, on 4 October 1890, and toured internationally reaching Australia by 1892. This cover has been overprinted for use in the New Zealand season.
