Evening Post" Photo. Men of the Ist Battalion Wellington Regiment (City of Wellington's Own) leaving the Basin Reserve on Saturday after inspection by the Quartermaster-General, Colonel P. H. Bell, D.5.0., and on their way to the Town Hall.for inspection by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. Below, Colonel Bell, accompanied by Lieut.-Colonel A. L. George, commandant of the regiment, is seen carrying out the inspection at the Basin Reserve. (Evening Post, 26 August 1940)
This photographic diagram shoivs the ivorld's largest aeroplane, the Douglas 819 long-range bomber, as it recently looked in its steel jig at the Santa Monica (California) plant of the Douglas Aircraft Company. The black lines show the size of the centre section and wing, minus twelve feet of tips. It is being built by 500 craftsmen and 100 engineers, 200 of whom are shown on the jig's seven working levels. This photograph was taken from the tail section, which will be joined to the nose section behind the jig after the huge steel skeleton of the supporting structure is removed. The most formidable aircraft in history, this new United States army bomber will weigh over seventy tons when fully loaded, and its four engines will develop 6000 horse-poiver. Flying tests of the giant aeroplane are to take place about October. (Evening Post, 26 August 1940)
