Commemorative plaque to commemorate the first soldiers to leave New Zealand for active service, the South African War 1899-1902. The first contingent of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles assembled and trained on this ground, then known as Campbell's Farm, and sailed from Wellington on the S.S. Waiwera, October 21st 1899.
