Why is Te Puna Interloan moving from VDX?

VDX has not been developed for a number of years and its end of life date is due to be announced by OCLC later this year.

Members have been asking for a system designed to meet their resource sharing needs.

Worldshare ILL is such a system and offers additional functionality outlined below.

Read about some of the things you might like about the new Te Puna interloan platform (ppt, 1.80MB)

What is included in WorldShare ILL?

The WorldShare ILL platform will sit within your library’s instance that you already use for Te Puna metadata services, for example, https://yourlibrary.share.worldcat.org/wms and will offer several benefits for resource sharing.

WorldShare ILL on https:// yourlibrary.share.worldcat.org/wms

Ability to lend and borrow within:

  • New Zealand
  • Internationally

Integrated billing

  • Interloan Billing Service (IBS) for New Zealand and Australian requests
  • OCLC’s IFM for international requests

Both payment services help you save money on fee-based transactions and simplify the transaction process.

Opportunity to upgrade to Tipasa

Tipasa is OCLC’s premium resource sharing product, also on the WorldShare platform. It allows for end user requesting, more system integration etc. Tipasa

Tipasa is available at an extra subscription cost, at a reduced rate for Te Puna members.

Email us if you are interested in exploring this option further.

Training

Training will include:

  • roadshows around the country run by Te Puna Servoces
  • online training documentation
  • Te Puna Services support available for individual queries

VDX (on Te Puna platform)

VDX will be used for trans Tasman requests until the Libraries Australia LADD service moves off VDX. Email alerts will be enabled for Australian requests coming through VDX.

What are the benefits of WorldShare ILL?

One platform for bibliographic activity and resource sharing

WorldShare ILL (and Tipasa) sit within your current WorldShare instance (the new Te Puna Services platform). Within the one platform you can:

  • handle international requests as well as national requests
  • easily manage collection management tasks prompted by resource sharing
  • get statistical reporting capturing associated vendor activity, open access activity, purchase activity as well as interloan activity.

Direct interrogation of WorldCat (rather than the z39.50 connection search of WorldCat used now) will provide better search functionality.

Resolution of the issue where 0 results were returned for known items.

Vendor integrations

Vendor integration within the products offers you workflow efficiencies, for example,

  • British Library, NLM within WorldShare ILL.
  • RapidILL within Tipasa OCLC are investigating other vendors, for example, Reprints Desk, Subito.

OCLC are investigating other vendors, for example, Reprints Desk, Subito.

Ongoing developments and improvements

WorldShare ILL has regular development and enhancements which usually seamlessly occur overnight. Te Puna Interloan will no longer be unavailable during work hours because of system upgrades.

Improved functionality

  • Book club workflows
  • Open access workflows
  • Purchase request workflows
  • Book straps and shipping labels Article Exchange with file size limit of 120mb – can also be used for secure document delivery requirements outside interloans.More details will be provided as implementation progresses.

Improved view of serial enumeration

If you took advantage of your Te Puna Discovery layer to add serial enumeration details – this will now display in WorldShare ILL so that your serial enumeration details can be easily seen.

If you wish to take advantage of this feature please contact us for more information.

Deeplinking is still an option if you wish to continue with reduced workflows and offer up-to-date accurate information. See image below.

How will this move affect my Te Puna Services subscription?

The additional resource sharing functionality will be available to all Te Puna Services members at no additional cost for the next two years. All Te Puna Services will be reviewed prior to 2020/21 in consultation with Te Puna members.

Additionally:

  • If you currently pay a separate subscription for WorldShare ILL – there will be a small saving as you will no longer pay for this.
  • If you choose to upgrade to Tipasa, the subscription is at a reduced price due to you being a Te Puna member. There is the opportunity for further cost savings (Tipasa group discount offer) as the Tipasa group grows. If you choose Tipasa as part of the project, you will not have to pay the one-off implementation fee.

How will my library be trained in WorldShare ILL?

Training will include:

  • roadshows around the country run by Te Puna Services
  • online training documentation
  • Te Puna support available for individual queries.
