Levels of cataloguing

Find out about the different levels of cataloguing used at the National Library of New Zealand.

Full standard cataloguing

The National Library of New Zealand cataloguers create full standard catalogue records for most material in the heritage and General Collections. Items in the Alexander Turnbull Library Special Printed Collections and Cartographic Collection are catalogued using special rules for those types of material.

Cataloguing in Publication (CiP) records

Collection Description staff create pre-publication records for forthcoming New Zealand publications. These records follow the requirements of full standard records, with the exception of physical details, and are based on information received from the publisher. Records are upgraded to full level on receipt of the publication.

Pre-publication ISBN or ISSN records

The Standard numbers staff create pre-publication records when publishers apply for an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) or an ISSN (International Standard Serial Number). These records are abbreviated records and contain title information, publishing data, including proposed year of publication and the standard number assigned by the National Library. Records are upgraded to full level on receipt of the publication.
