Series 2 Inward letters (Maori)
This series comprises almost 3000 letters written to McLean by Maori from throughout New Zealand. It is the largest surviving accumulation of nineteenth-century letters in Maori. The earlier letters are mainly from Maori in those areas where McLean was active as an official. There are many letters, for example, relating to Taranaki land issues, and about land purchase negotiations with Ngati Kahungunu hapu in Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa. The fighting against Te Kooti on the East Coast is among the topics covered in later letters. But there are letters from Maori letters from all over New Zealand, particularly for the later years of McLean's career. The letters have been arranged into folders in chronological order, except for several folders of undated letters (folders 0702A-0702I) and a separate batch of letters acquired from the estate at a later time (folders 1010-1019) which remain in the order in which they were received.
