Photographing Wellingtons hippest musicians

The Simple Image is an exhibition of photographs taken by Wellington photographer Barry Clothier between 1964-1969.

Barry Clothier was a keen jazz musician and photographer, and in the latter half of the 1960s he conducted dozens of photo shoots for all the hippest of Wellington musicians.

Rarely seen photographs on show

The exhibition features a selection rarely-seen photographs of musicians such as Dinah Lee, The Fourmyula, The Avengers, Maria Dallas, Bruno Lawrence and many others, all drawn from the extensive collection of Clothier’s photographs now held at the Alexander Turnbull Library.

Film and television footage

The Simple Image also features a selection of film and television footage drawn from the archival collections at Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision which bring to life the music, the musicians and the city of Wellington in the 1960.
