In 1992 the Turnbull Library acquired 700 colour transparencies recording John Colles Burland’s 4-month stay on Palmerston Atoll in the Cook Islands in 1960, together with his unpublished manuscript describing this time.
John Burland wrote about he history of the atoll including the story of William Marsters who arrived in Palmerston in 1863 and died there in 1899, having created a family 'kingdom' with his 3 Polynesian wives.
