Language and New Zealand's relationship with China
There has been unprecedented growth in our relationship with China in recent years. China is New Zealand’s largest trading partner, our largest source of overseas students, largest source of long-term migrants, and second largest source of tourists.
China’s presence in New Zealand is likely to increase further over the coming years. For many New Zealanders, the lack of shared language and cultural roots can make that challenging.
Former New Zealand diplomat in China and now Director of the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington, Rebecca Needham will talk about the importance of building Chinese language and cultural competency in order for New Zealanders to engage in a more informed and confident way with China and successfully navigate the opportunities and risks in this important relationship.
