The Medaille de la Reine Elisabeth recipients
After the First World War the Belgian Government honoured 33 New Zealand women with the Medaille de la Reine Elisabeth (Queen Elisabeth Medal) for performing ‘exceptional services to Belgium in the relief of the suffering of its citizens’.
Historian Imelda Bargas will discuss what has been learned about the award recipients and the ongoing challenges to making visible the lives of these and other New Zealand women who were integral to the war effort.
