Sophie Scott goes south by Alison Lester

Lucky Alison Lester, she got a trip to Mawson Station in the Antarctic as an Australian Antarctic Arts Fellow. This vibrant picture book is her response to that adventure, seen through the eyes of nine year old Sophie Scott.

It is a feast for the eyes, incorporating photographs, maps, childrens’ artwork as well as Alison’s own distinctive illustrations. Rich blues and oranges predominate in the images, and contrast beautifully with the whites and greys we naturally associate with Antarctica. The wonder and excitement of her journey shine through every word of the diary entries and picture captions. Thanks Alison, for creating and sharing such a treasure with us!

We explain your book to our students. You can follow our Sophie goes eTwinning Project. Climate change, global warming and life issues in Antarctica made us very excited. We thank you
