Now a major motion picture, Gayle Forman's novel, If I stay is a real tear-jerker so you may need to keep a box of tissues handy.
The day begins like any other day for Mia, her parents and her little brother Teddy whom she adores. The four are taking advantage of an unexpected holiday to visit friends and spend quality time together when disaster strikes. In a brutal accident Mia loses her entire family.
Unconscious, Mia lies in a hospital while her life flashes before her. She remembers her best friend Kim, boyfriend Adam, her achievements, challenges and all her future hopes and dreams. She can also see the pain and grief around her from loved ones willing her to live. Mia has to make a decision if she should stay or let go of life.
The story is simple but intensely moving. Mia the main character is beautifully developed as the story unfolds. However I was taken by surprise when the story ended abruptly, until I turned a few pages to discover that author Gayle Forman has provided readers with an introduction to her second book about Mia in a sequel called ‘Where she went’. As an added exclusive, there is an interview with the stars of the film.
A recommended chick lit for young adults who love romance coupled with sadness.
