Buffalo Soldier by Tanya Landman

Buffalo Soldier by Tanya Landman

Tanya Landman, one of my favourite authors has won the 2015 Carnegie medal for  this book Buffalo Soldier.

The novel begins with Charlotte a slave girl in the South during the American Civil War.  To avoid being caught or violated Charlotte disguises herself as a soldier. Set against the backdrop of the emancipation of American slaves. Charlotte or Charley’s character is a feisty, courageous taker who Landman enriches with clarity and accuracy. She becomes a buffalo soldier, a name given to African Americans who enlisted with the Union Army to fight in the American Civil War.
The story is brutally honest. Tanya Landman does not compromise on the truth. She puts it all out there so that the reader gets a factual and authentic understanding of this tumultuous time in American history.

Read an interview with Tanya Landman about her prize winning entry.
